Its Like Watchin Hair Grow
I set my old peecan tree on fire a coupla days ago and am gonna see if I can burn it down instead of cuttin it down..
Here is what I've got.. Its a straight trunk, about 3 feet thick, up to 12 or 14 feet, then it has/had a fork and is hollow in the middle of it with a big hole, then a big limb goes up about another 10 to 12 feet and had a long limb that reaches out toward the street, and is broken off above that..
I set the fire in the hole at the 12 foot level and it has burned about half way around and half way thru now.. If it burns like I want it to, it will burn in half at the 12 foot level and the top part with the long limb will fall and still stay well in my yard.. But if it burns crazy it will twist when it falls and likely thro the long limb into the street..
So I'm havin to keep an eye on it in case the limb goes out in the street and I have to get it out before a car hits it..
But its like watchin hair grow watchin this thank s l o o o w l y burn.. But I've got a new, full box of ceegars and a coupla bottles of homebrew cold and I just sit on the porch and watch it and wave at everybody drivin by honkin and hollerin at me..
But I'm gettin impatient and am bout ready to get a gallon of gas out and douse the sunzabitch and burn the whole damn thang where it sits !! NAH. Not really.. I'm havin too much fun tryin to guess what time its gonna do the deed..
But I really would like it to fall when there aint much traffic on the street.. I could just see some crack head drivin by when it fell and freakin em out and have a wreck !! My luck, the asshole would probably run over ME when he crashed, then run off..
We just had a t-storm move by just to the south of us and pushed some fair gusts of wind thru here and had that long limb rockin that tree for a minute.. That tells me it aint gonna be too awful long till it falls.. I just wish it would wait till after the 5 o'clock traffic gets over with..
I've got a pot of pintos with diced ham ready and a loaf of bread that will be ready to come out of the oven in about 30 minutes and after eatin I guess I'll assume my position back on the porch and have a tasty after-supper ceegar and enjoy the rain-cooled breeze some more..

Hope the limb came down safely!! Your dinner sure did sound good. One day I'm going to say to hell with this damn diet and just get fat and sassy!!!
Any recipes for leg of lamb? Don't forget the garlic!
WB, you keep talkin bout them good vittles, is making me hungry every time I visit your site. I sure wish we lived closer so I could bring a big Vidalia to go with them pintos.
Ya'll have a good day,
Almtnman
Sorry MamaBear, but mutton aint one of my regular specialities, but I do have it occasionally, and I know that unless you plan on addin a bunch of spices and over-powerin the flavor of the meat, you gotta be careful cookin it.. With mutton, LESS IS MORE !!
If it was me cookin it, I thank I would concentrate more on the PREPARATION than the actual cookin..
A MARINADE or a RUB is what I would go with.. But Rosemary is always a must with lamb whether in a rub or marinade..
Here is the "catchy" part tho.. For a weekend feast I would also use Sage on it but for a weekday I would use Ginger..
As for the Garlic, I would make a garlic-butter to baste it with.. Lamb tends to get dry on me and this would be a good way to prevent that.. And, not that I would advocate anybody usin any alcohol in any way, but some wine in the garlic-butter sauce would be good too..
I DO actually have a Leg-O-Lamb recipe somewhere, now if I can just find it.. There just aint no tellin how I may have this damn thang TAGGED as tho !!
Cheryl, no sooner than I posted that it started rainin and rained all that nite and half the next day too.. It doused the fire and I have spent the last 2 days tryin to get the damn thang reignited again..
I finally gave up and tossed a cable over the limb and pulled it down and I'm gonna let the damn tree just burn till it gets ready to fall ..
The problem has been that with me sittin out there and messin with the tree, that every stupid asshole in town has wanted to stop and walk out under the tree and stop and talk !! I have to tell em the damn thang is gonna fall at any time and they need to get their ass out from under it !!
Now mind you, I have rope and flags around the danger area, and they will climb over the rope/with flags to stand under the saggin tree, with it on fire, and want to stand and talk.. And the sad part is, is that booger-eatin-mohrons act like they want ME to come out and join em lookin up at a tree on fire, with rope and flags around it, and get into some deep DEEP discussion on which way I thank the damn thang is gonna fall..
But after I told em I didnt have any Homeowners Insurance the appeal of standin under the tree lost a LOT of its appeal !!
Not a whole lot new around here.. I'm still tryin to keep the tree burnin and not havin a lot of luck at it..
I thank tomoro will be the day that it comes down tho.. I have a cable and chains hooked on the top part and it wiggles real good now when I give the cable a yank.. A little more burnin in the mornin and around noon it should come on down with just a good tug..
Nobody stopped to shoot the breeze with me today but yesterday Billy came and sat and had a few coldbbers with me out under my hickory tree and my padna Gerald stopped for a coupla coldbeers and the Mrs. joined us for a while too..
Coupla more folks stopped by for a minute to say howdy but didnt stay.. Its just so damn humid outside durin the day now that after justa few minutes your clothes are soaked with sweat.. Sure takes a lot of the fun out of sittin outside..
My ol back is hurtin me tonite so I'm gonna call it a nite early and go lay down and listen to the radio and see whats happenin out in talk radio land.. Every time I turned the radio on today they were talkin bout the bridge fallin and I've had bout enuff of the exploitation of folks misery..
Tomoro is Friday and thats a good day for some juicy news to come out so I imagine that I'll have somethin to go off on this weekend and get my blood pressure up real good..
Goooood Morniiiig WB.
Jeez, you must have scared some of that rain our way. It's been raining on and off for three days. But we need all we can get, cause this West Texas sand can soak it up in a few hours.
Course it is really messing up our new little pool I got for my Sweet Sarah. Every time I add stuff to get the water chemistry right, the rain adds even more water and screws it up. Oh well, she has an ear infection now anyway and can't get in the water for about another week.
I read your post earlier and made myself and Sweet Sarah a pot of beans with ham, tomatoes, cumin, onions, garlic and such last night. We sat outside with Sweet Sissy (her sixty seven pound Lab puppy) under the little swinging porch thing we got and had that plus some hot cornbread and butter, while there was a medium to light rain falling.
We could hear the thunder several miles off and I told her we would have to go inside soon as lighting always came with the thunder.
She said: "Didn't you always tell me that thunder was God's way of saying he would bring us rain for our plants and for us"?...and why do we have to be afraid of it?
I told her that the lighting was like his children and they were young and didn't always look out for what they might strike and hit and that God wanted us to get out of the way of any of his children's lighting because they might hit us by accident.
It is hard sometimes for me to explain things to Sarah, but I am doing about a hundred times better than I did with my kids almost forty someodd years ago.
I hope your tree is down and you and your neighbors survived the ordeal.
Myself, I would have just got my grandsons after it with my little $ 39.00 electric chainswaw and then up hooked on it with my Grandson's pickup and pulled it down and drug it all the way to the landfill. But then agian, the landfill is not far from here.
I hope you get that other battery and other things go ok for you and yours.
Take care and take care of those you love.
Papa Ray
Papa Ray, that pool sounds real nice.. I've got a round 8 foot stock waterin tank out at the farm and I thank I'll pull it up to the well and get thang full of water and me and the Kid may have us a water fight soon !!
Those pools they have that I can afford are too flimsy for the Kid and do good to last ONE DAY.. She has to have one of those steel ones that are indestructable.. Makes it a lot easier for me to get in and out of too..
The rain is pretty well gone from around here now and the humidity has taken its place and its supposed to get on up toward 100 degrees soon.. I've sweat so much out there messin with that tree that my damn skin is sore.. The ground has warmed up enuff finally that I dont even need to turn on any hot water when takin a shower, just turn the cold on and climb in.. Sure makes that ol sore sweaty skin feel much better..
Hope that ear infection gets cleared up soon, cause I know how it must feel for Sweet Sarah to have that pool out there and not be able to get in it..
Splainin thangs to them kids can be a real chore sometimes.. The main thang is to take the time to at least try to..
I've been wondering if that tree has fell on WB. It's been mighty quite here.
POUR SOME MOTOR OIL IN THE HOLE AND IT WILL BURN MUCH LONGER! WISH YOU HAD VIDEO OF THE LOOKS PEOPLE ARE GIVING YOU!
I MIGHT USE THAT "BURN IT DOWN IDEA" I GOT A TREE THAT NEEDS TO GO BUT THEY WANT $1100 TO CUT IT DOWN. THERE ARE POWER LINES IN THE MIX TOO. HMMMM
I aint posted nothin caues the tree has had most of my attention and it has been aggravatin me to NO END !!
I've been spendin most of my days sittin out there to try and keep the booger-eatin-moh-rons out from under it and it has been a hot, sweaty ordeal sittin out there, and the flies are drivin me nuts and I've had regular company stoppin to shoot the shit and drank up all my beer and the Mrs. has been keepin me company out there too..
I've been tryin to burn it in-two about 12 foot off the ground but fire fallin down started the bottom of the tree on fire too so I didnt know which was gonna burn thru first, the middle or the bottom..
I ran a cable over the top and began pullin on it tryin to get it to break at the middle but broke the cable at least 3 times, usin all my strong cable up and now I've just got a heavy wire on it persuade it down when there aint much traffic..
The damn thang has burned to about the thickness of a 2x4 and still wont fall.. That damn peecan is some TUFF STUFF !!
But I have swung it now till I've got a good sized crack thru it where I want it to burn at and it wont be long till the deed is done and I can pop the top on that special bottle of homebrew that I've got chilled to celebrate the fall with..
I NEED that damn tree down so I can go to the farm and get to mowin again before the grass gets away from me..
I've been usin a mixture of gas and burnt oil on it but I have to be careful with the oil cause I have a bunch of businesses around me and a bunch of older neighbors that would get really upset with me if I used too much oil and made a helluva stank floatin around here..
With it just bein the tree burnin it smells like I'm just havin a really long bbq !! The Mrs. is complainin bout the smoke makin her hungry all the time and since I've been sittin outside bout all day I aint beem cookin much and we have been eatin a lot of sandwiches and Heat-And-Eat kinda stuff..
They have those big LOGS of bologne on sale here and I'm diein to get that big chunk down so I can get that stuff and put it on to smoke.. I've got a grill and a #3 washtub I can make a helluva smoker with over that big chunk but I have to get the sunzabitch on the ground first !!
Tim, if you can get the Power Co. to come trim the limbs away from the lines first it will make it a lot easier.. I have a tree like that that I've been tryin to get em to trim for a coupla years and now they have finally got it trimmed where I can work with it.. This thang has limbs that are 20 and 30 feet long that stick out over the street and really needs somethin done about it cause they are saggin down and caint nothin very tall go under it.. If I dont do somethin soon the City will cut it and add the charges to my taxes next year and I can do it a helluva lot cheaper than what it'll cost if THEY do it..
Any of it you can do yourself will help get the cost down of somebody else doin it.. I've been workin on this ol peecan tree for several years and have gotten it down to the last of it now..
I have 3 of the MAJOR phone TRUNKS that run into and thru town AND MY HOUSE about 25 to 30 feet away from this tree so I HAVE to do this part right !! So far I've only had small limbs to touch any of it and I had a surprise limb that fell while I was gone that pulled MY house phone line down and I was able to reconnect it myself..
I have had ABSOLUTELY the best luck so far and with a little skill I can get the rest of it down and get it cleaned up and GONE without any major problems.. To be able to get this done is gonna be a real accomplishment for an ol one-legged man and I'll be able to have pride in the job I've done and pat myself on the back a little for it..
My pride and my self-esteem could really use a boost right now and it will help me get the confidence I thank I'm gonna be needin soon when the SHTF.. And if we should need a leader soon, folks will be able to point to me and say that if its a tuff task that I can get the job done ..
Now, if ya'll will excuse ,e. I'm gonna go pull that damn tree down !!
WB, too bad I'm way over here and you're way over there. If we lived a little closer, I could have brought my tractor and knocked the tree down with the front end loader.
And I wanted to mention to Tim about the tree close to the power line. I have had a couple like that and didn't want to mess with, so I called the power company told them that they needed to send somebody out to take the tree down before it fell on their lines. I also mentioned that I didn't want to do it because I might knock their lines down. They came out and took them down for me, no charge.
Hang in there WB, I just know that you're gonna get that tree down soon.
i have the perfect stumpbustin' truck this side of the mizz-sippee, only mine's orange and i call her the "great pumpkin" - pulled many a good sized stump with'er.
she's semi-retired on my mountain in arkansas just waiting for me to get a hankering!
