Have You Noticed It Too ??

I saw a headline today that said Truck Traffic was bein inspected for terrorism goin into New York City, and I have seen that there are several places in the South that are gonna be havin D.O.T. Truck Inspections, in several places around here too..

Kinda makes me wonder if I dont need to be doin some thangs that I've been puttin off till I got all my taxes paid !! I've got till 01 July to pay em before all that extra penalty and interest goes into effect, but I already have the money rat-holed but want to wait till after I have my "pecker-checker" appointment the 22nd of this month, just in case I have to go into the hospital and the Mrs. needs a motel room for a coupla days or gas money to drive back and forth..

There sure is a lot of shit that I need for my camp and it is worryin me.. I've GOTTA have 2 new batteries and I really need some bulk foodstuffs too, like oatmeal and rice and dried beans.. But that kinda stuff tends to get infested with bugs real easy and you caint store it for long periods of time without it gettin to the point that it just aint fit to eat.. Several of my emergency meds are goin out of date and need to be replaced too.. Those take longer to get too..

I need a new CB and my "kicker" box is broke, so I'm not gonna have my long range communications I thought I was.. My kicker box ran on 110 AC and if/when I get a new one it will be 12 volt this time.. But for that I'm gonna have to devise me a hand powered generator to keep the power output up to proper levels to be able to make long distance contact.. Runnin my 5000 watt Power Base generator a lot will eat up my gasoline supple real quick and never can tell what the gas supply will be like after a while.. I've got an old kids bicycle that I have rigged with an alternator off a car but I caint seem to get any output out of it.. What I need is an old timey car generator.. I used to have one but my Daddy gave it away to somebody.. He was always good at givin MY shit away !! I figgered I could put a kid on the bicycle and have em peddle and keep the batteries charged.. Might take a little bribin tho.. Maybe I can find somebody around here that knows what I'm doin wrong with the alternator and can set me straight on it..

But it definitely sounds like the threat of terrorism is on the increase and action is startin to be geared up to counter it.. I just wonder how long it will be before the official announcement is let and who is gonna make it.. I've got better thangs to worry bout right now tho and I'm just gonna go ahead and act like the announcement has already been made.. I've always thought that Threat Level was a bunch of shit.. They dont change it till AFTER somethin happens anyway..

Tomoro is probably gonna be a busy day for me so guess I better go get a little rest..

No, I didn't! Darn, WB, I hate you worrying over this stuff while you have the impending visit to the doc to think about. I like the preparations you're making. Perhaps I should be heading to Texas rather than the border to the north here!!! Check this website out - have fun writing! Only in America can this happen.

It aint so much worryin bout it, Cheryl, as it is just dreadin it !!

I love goin to the farm and the garden and VISITIN a few days, but like it is, its just too damn much work to stay at it for very long..

If I had the place set up a little better or had more help it would be a lot different..

I know that after The Shit Hits The Fan there aint gonna be any shortage of help, but it would be so much better to at least have it half-assed ready before then.. And havin a workin model to go by would be so much better than havin a bunch of folks just show up and wanna start tryin to engineer everythang and of coarse somebody is gonna wanna be the boss and if they dont get their way they will just take their ball and go home..

I've set up camps hundreds of times in all kinds of places and all kinds of conditions and I just get tired of folks wantin to second-guess my intentions and havin to waste, often-times, precious time in havin to explain why I wanna do somethin a certain way.. When you get two people arguein over somethin, then you have just taken two useful people out of the chain to get stuff done in a timely manner and everybody get to be in their respective places and all the pressin chores done and everybody gets to rest a minute and catch their breath and reflect on the situation at hand and see if anythang has been neglected..

Its just so much nicer for everybody to show up and see who gets to gather firewood and who gets to gather water and who is gonna do the cookin and who is gonna do the cleanin up..

If you have to add in who is gonna be the Doc and who is not able to do heavy labor due to med condition and who is allergic to what and who has a pheobia of somethin and who is on a special diet and who snores and who sleepwalks and, well, you get the picture..

Like I have OFTEN said here, I dont suffer fools well, and when somebody shows up and wants to be treated and accomodated different than everybody else, well, they will get shown the gate with instructions to forget the way back..

Emotional problems are gonna be the hardest to deal with.. The best way to handle them is to create a close-knit group where everybody depends on everybody else and animosity and contempt caint be tolerated.. No doubt that folks are gonna feel anxiety and depression and fear, but the best way to deal with it is for everybody to stick together and develope a "one for all, and all for one" attitude and watch each others blind side..

You have valid points, WB. Wish I lived closer, I'd come over and help you and the Mrs just cuz you're my buds now. Perhaps we should seriously consider your place as our contingency plan when the SHTF. How I'd get there, though, is beyond me! I can do practically anything but not too crazy about bugs, snakes and spiders!!!!

I take direction well, too! I think when we suffer what we fear, people will be more inclined to listen than fight. The whole world, as we knew it, will be gone. They will naturally want to follow someone. I think. I just don't know any more. This world is just crazy.

Frankly, to survive we must band together. America has gotten soft and won't know what the hell to do. We will need men such as yourself.

Hey WB, yea, like you I hate worrying but if I'm doing something about it, it ain't so bad.

I found this place a while back it has good info on a lot of subjects.

Just doing a search on google I found a bunch of promising links on hand crank power.

I remember seeing those ol' war movies where they have the native cranking out while the Aussie is tapping out the morse on where the Japs were.

If I was living in a windy place like I am, rigging up something that uses wind power would be the ticket.

Trouble is, like you my available funds just ain't available for much, except necessities.

I store a lot of food in big plastic toats or what ever you call them. I bust open a big bag of rice and throw it in to collect moisture and then seal it with duct tape. You got to watch what can goods you store, the ones that don't have the coating on the inside of the cans don't last too long. Those you can check out by just buying different brands, or just using normal canning methods, open them up and put them in jars.

I also have three or four manual can openers stored in various totes, plus I still got my p38? from the Army.

A hand or foot powered water pump is what I've been looking for lately.

I used those hand pumps up until I was a teenager. Makes good muscle.

Well, I got a heavy rain last night, got Sweet Sarah's Playhouse together and it's on a platform and skids so it can be moved.

Her and her girlfriends are going to have a house warming this afternoon I think.

She's tickled pink over having her own house.

I'm a real hero...at least for a day or two.

Papa Ray, have you checked "Ammo and Gear" in my blogroll ?? They had stuff like hand pumps and foot pumps before when I looked.. I bet they still got em and they aint too expensive either.. We got a Atwoods in Paris that has em stocked and on sale a lot.. TSC (Tractor Supply Corp) has that kinda stuff too and they are all over Texas..

Believe it or not, them old movies is where I got the idea of the kid pumpin the bicycle to run the generator from.. It was a movie in the Philipines durin WW 2 and a kid was on a bicycle peddlin and the American that was shipwrecked there rigged a radio to it and was feedin the kid bubble gum out of C-Rats to pedal it..

But I wanna keep my generator simple and plentiful so I can replace it or replicate it if I need to..

I've got 12 volt powered material out the ying-yang !! Lights, fuel pumps, water pumps, TVs, radios, heaters, and I dont know what I'd find if I looked real good..

But, Cheryl, I've got plenty of room and I've still got a buncha beds that aint had "dubs" called on yet, so hot foot it on down here and join in with whats gonna be the Survivors !! We may not have a camera crew to keep tabs on us and I dont figger we'll be votin anybody out but Sherry's hubby does some mean geetar playin and I've spent many-an-hour playin washers.. I'm sure that good times will be had along with the bad ..

I thank that most of the stuff I have is in glass jars and bottles so it will keep for quiet a while in them.. After a while the menu is gonna consist of fish and wild game, I'm sure.. I've got cases of sauces of different kinds that will keep the menu from gettin stale.. But FRESH is always better than out of a can, even if it is squirrel or rabbit or possum or coon or deer or wild hog or turkey..

If you thank about it, thats gonna beat the hell out of the dogs and cats that a bunch of people are gonna be forced to make do with !!

Thanks WB, I'll check them out. I went to a couple of swap meets where they sold farm equipment and almost got exactly the hand water pump and fittings that I wanted. Almost like in I was ten minutes late, he had just sold it to a guy.

I also have another link for you. They have lots of info, a lot of it downloadable in zip files.

It's called Operational Medicine and looks like it has a little of everything.

That's something I have been working on putting to gether too. A real heavy duty Medical kit. One that will have stuff that possibly only a trained teck would know how to use.

I have seen some military type kits that are just what I want, but they are too expensive.

Old generators are still in some old junk yards, usually all they need is new brushes and cleaning up and maybe new insulation sleeves for the posts. (they tend to crack up with age).

I haven't had time to look at those other links I left on 12v hand/foot power, and most likly won't for a few days.

Sweet Sarah has called some of her friends and they are coming over in a few minutes. She is eating a giant burrito I fixed her now and can't wait to start fixing "her new house" up.

Take care

I'm no expert on the subject, but from what I remember, you have to have an "exciter" 12v source (battery) connected to an alternator for it to work. Thats why when you pull the battery out of a running engine it dies these days, but used to keep running back in the generator days.

Or so I hear.
